For years, I’ve been chasing the idea of being able to perfectly capture the emotions of grief into music. For years, I’ve thought maybe once I completed a masterpiece, my magnum opus, I might begin to heal. The truth? It’s an impossible endeavor. I may never write a piece to top it all, but I will continue to write comfortably knowing I try everyday to be my best.

Sunrise is a piece I started working on over the summer of 2024, but it wasn’t until after Hurricane Helene hit Western North Carolina that it truly began to take shape. The hurricane launched Appalachian State University into an unexpected two-week long break and the town of Boone was quiet by the 11 pm curfew. The destructive flooding our town saw was heartbreaking.

My good friend came to me our sophomore year of our undergrad and told me she was interested in commissioning me for her recital in the coming year, as she is passionate about playing music by modern female composers. I had never felt more motivated to write a piece of music; it meant so much to someone I care about and I wanted it to be something she could express her own emotions with. I have so much gratitude for her trusting me with a piece of artwork dedicated to her loss.

“Sound of the Sea” was a project I created whilst beginning my journey with electronic music. The piece features different ocean and aquatic animal sounds throughout the piece, a loop synthesizer I created on VCV Rack, different recorded sound effects (including a singing wine glass), and my own voice. I wanted to mimic the rise and fall of waves from the ocean, as well as the beauty of underwater scenery.
